Site Maintenance and news

It’s been quite a while since I posted in this blog, as I really lost interest in blogging. But with the new year I’ve decided to start again with the posts.

I did publish something in Animealam’s Writing Corner, couple of stories, one of them with nine chapters. But’s it’s not been much, and I often wonder if anyone ever reads them. Still, I decided to update everything and start paying attention the blogs again.

In Animealam’s Writing Corner case, it has to undergo mayor work. Something is wrong with the WordPress there, so much so, that no matter which blogging app I use (on the iMac, and the iPad) I can’t even see the posts, much less blog from there.

I’ll be working on a separate installation, and moving everything from the old blog to the new one, then delete the old one. The new blog will have a much simpler theme in hopes of making it more efficient, and easier to work with. At the moment I’m experimenting with the BirdTIPS theme, and so far it’s ok, we’ll see what works.

I’m also starting to work with the WP plugin PODS for Animealam’s Writing Corner, The Vault, and Jan’s site. There is still much to do, but hopefully this year the sites will be fully operational.

I’m not sure what I will be posting here though, perhaps my experience with iPad apps, the apps for the Mac, and The Sims 3 stuff. I got rather addicted to since late October of last year. I mostly plan to use the Sims as a way to illustrate some of my stories.

This is all for now, I’ll probaly post something on the progress I’m making later in the week, or the next.

I’m just testing my new android phone. A Samsung Galaxy S II.

I’m loving it so far. The screen is large enough to see well, 4.3″ if I’m not wrong and the QWERTY keyboard, so similar to the iPod Touch I used to have, is a vast improvement over the usual phone keyboard.

I have to go now, but I’ll be posting more often. There are quite a few things I want to write about.

The need to rant is great after trying to use Custom Post Types, Custom Taxonomies, and Custom Fields in Word Press.

As they said, it looked too good to be true.

I spent nearly the whole weekend and then some more trying to get the [insert swear words of choice] things to work. I googled my fingers, my eyes, and very nearly my poor brain off. The gazillion tutorials available all made it seem so simple, but nooooooo it’s a nightmare.

I have a basic understanding of PHP programming, mind you VERY basic, but I did manage to code the Custom Posts and Custom Taxonomies without a plugin, and with one as well. The problem arises when you want to SEE the things on you page or post. I could not find a clear reference of exactly WHERE in the world does one have to put the code. I tried it just about every where, but it’s not showing at all.

The real problems arose when using their default theme. Twenty Ten. It’s not bad, not quite what I want, but can live with the thing for the purpose of testing. Personally I wanted to use Arclite (love that theme). I modified as explained everywhere the single.php file. Nothing came out of that. So I made my Custom Post Type single.php (singe-posted-stories, and single-posted_stories) no luck either.

I then went over the code, and surprise! It call’s a template called loop.php. Went over there and my mind boggled. Where am I supposed to add my code????? None of the tutorials tell you you have to go there if you want to show your Custom Post Types in a loop, because the loop does not work even if you add one into a page template.

I’m so discouraged. This was just what I needed for three sites I was planning. One for Jan’s list of fics, one for my own list (this would have included slash fics) and one to keep track of my stories. The later would have been personal and in place of trying a wiki.

I did get MediaWiki working and it’s rather nice to keep everything organized, and even write on line. But MediWiki markup is off putting, and I the wyswyg extensions froze the thing. Still, I guess this seems to be my only choice at the moment for my writing needs, unless I can get WordPress working.

I’m a rather stubborn person (my family would say that’s an understatement) so I will keep trying. I really want to get Jan’s list revamped like I said I would so loooong ago.

So I’m off to get as many PHP tutorials as I can in hopes that I can make more sense of the WordPress codex. At least I know I’m not the only one with this problem. Not all of us are crackshot programmers.

I’ll be posting links to those tutorials I found useful for WordPress and PHP.

Test from the iPad

Well, this is just a test to see if I can finally post something from the iPad.

I already wrote something for the LiveJournal and it worked great. I’m not to happy with the WordPress app I’m using. It’s rather limiting in format. But should do for small posts. When I need to post a story or something, then I’ll use the desktop.

Writing

<div class=\"postavatar\">writing</div>

It’s been long since I last posted something to the blogs. Truth be told I have been busy trying to work on my fanfictions. I really have almost two hundred of what I call Story Bunnies (these are stories that have from 3 to 400 pages of written notes).

To make things worse I haven’t stopped writing new ideas (plot bunnies and story bunnies). There have been several challenges at Potions and Snitches Archive that I really want to respond to. One of the challenges has so far two responses, and the other one. I have avoided reading them to keep my ideas clear.

Other things that I have been doing is that my faithful iPod Classic (32 gb) finally died on me. It had been with me for at least three years I think, probably even four. I did replaced it already with an iPod Touch. I’m extremely happy with the thing. It not only plays music, but lets you do quite a lot of things, even if the screen is pretty small.

On the iPod I have QuickOffice Connect, so I can not only read, but also work with my stories. I only need a wifi connection, and the places I frequent have public wifi. For this I use both GoogleDocs (for notes and plot outlines), and my favourite, Dropbox (this is the referals link). I love this service and while the free account has 2 Gb of space. I do require much more so I have the 50 Gb account. I even convinced my mother to have it, that way all of her computers (an old laptop, a desktop, and a netbook) documents are syncronized. My nephew also has it.

I have also found the new version of Fanfiction Dowloader to be wonderful even if it has only two sites for now. The previous versions used to have many more. This new version has the advantage of outputting the fanfictions in epub, mobi (and a few other ebook formats). It does require an additional software named Calibre, but I’m quite pleased with it as a way to FINALLY have all of the fanfictions I used to store in my hard disk in order. The best of this is that I also get to have a library of published novels by classic authors (those free). I can also read the fanfictions in my iPod Touch using either Stanza, or iBook. I personally like Stanza better.

There is another fanfiction downloader site that I use. FicSavers It’s web based and outputs either html documents or docs. This one has more sites available, and I especially like it because I can get stuff from HP Fandom, Adultfanfiction.net, SkyeHawke, and Potion and Snitches Archive. I used to get The Silver Snitch II fics as well, but the downloader hasn’t been on line for a while. Converting these files to ebooks is not that easy, the end with some extra pages, but I get around that with another software named Sigil.

Update, soccer, and writing

It’s been a while since I wrote on any of the blogs, and have to admit to being neglectful. I really don’t have an excuse, as I’m not working or anything.

I have been writing though, and reading as much as I can. I’m rather obsessive about reading, and if the story is good I just can’t stop reading until I reach the end, or the last of what has been written. Lately my reading has been more focused on time travel stories. I prefer the re-do type, especially if they include part of TDH (The Deathly Hollows) but omit the Epilogue, or have Harry and Ginny divorce. Never liked the pairing, and was very disappointed that in TDH Rowling got them together, but it’s done, and thank good for fanfiction since I can read other outcomes.

Iycorner Update

<div class=\"postavatar\">iycorner-update</div>

I know I wrote that I would update iycorner about four days ago, but I haven’t got around doing it yet. I did solve the memory problem I had for running WordPress, and I finally have all the plugins working, but I have yet to re install WordPress.

Sites Troubleshooting

<div class=\"postavatar\">sites-troubleshooting</div>

For a while now I have been having problems with my WordPress installations. Iycorner.net, alandrem.net, and a couple more that were simply tests for my fic lists. The problem was that I didn’t have enough memory for the pllugins that I require for the sites.

I’m terribly shocked by what happened to Chile today. An earthquake of that magnitude is not frequently seen, and to be truthful when I read the SMS with the news this morning I could not believe it. I turned on the TV and could only stare at the images they were showing.

There is more information now, and I’m pleasantly surprised by the solidarity and respect of the other countries. They are waiting for Chile to have some idea of the damages they have and decide if and what type of help they need. I’m also very surprised by how the buildings withstood the damage of an 8.8 earthquake, when a 7.0 destroyed Haiti’s capital, and other cities. Even the number of victims cannot compare even though I believe it will get much higher. But it’s almost a certainty that it won’t be nearly as large as those they had in Haiti. From what I have been able to gather, Chile is well prepared for earthquakes since they have the record of the highest magnitude quake in history. The 1960 quake was 9.5
